Denarau Island is Fiji's easiest holiday: a resort island connected to the mainland by a short causeway, twenty minutes from Nadi Airport, where a string of big-name resorts — Sheraton, Westin, Hilton, Sofitel, Radisson, Marriott — line a shared beach and lagoon with a marina, a golf course and a village of restaurants and shops in the middle. You can be poolside within an hour of landing.
The appeal is scale and ease. These are large, polished resorts with multiple pools, kids' clubs, swim-up bars and spas, and because they share the island, you can dine at your neighbours' restaurants or take the free bus to Port Denarau for a change of scene. The beach is calm and sheltered — brown sand and lagoon rather than white sand and reef — which is the honest trade-off for the convenience.
Denarau is also the launchpad for everything else. The Mamanuca islands are an hour by catamaran from the marina, day cruises to Tivua and Malamala Beach Club leave every morning, and the Sabeto hot springs and mud pools, the Garden of the Sleeping Giant and the Sigatoka sand dunes are all short drives. Many families split a week between Denarau and an outer island.
May to October is the dry, cooler season and prime for families; November to April is warmer and wetter, with cyclone season a consideration in the first quarter, balanced by softer rates and lush gardens. How do I get to Denarau?
Jetstar, Fiji Airways, Qantas and Virgin Australia fly direct from Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane to Nadi in under four hours (and from Adelaide and Perth via connections). Denarau is a 20-minute drive from the airport, and our deals will include the transfer. Australians don't need a visa for stays up to four months.
Is Denarau's beach good?
Denarau's beach is calm, safe and fine for paddling and water sports, but it's a lagoon with darker sand rather than the white-sand, coral-reef beach of the outer islands. The resorts compensate with very large pools. If a postcard beach is the priority, pair Denarau with a few nights in the Mamanucas or Yasawas.
