South Coast Deals
Sri Lanka's south coast is where the island's beach holiday lives: 150 kilometres of palm-backed bays, surf points and sleepy fishing towns running from Bentota through Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa and on to Tangalle, all reached in two to three hours from Colombo on the Southern Expressway. It's the part of the country that shows up in every photograph — stilt fishermen, the Galle lighthouse, whales off Mirissa — and the easiest place for a first visit.
Galle Fort is the anchor: a UNESCO-listed walled town of Dutch-colonial streets, boutique hotels in merchant houses, rooftop cafés and sunset walks along the ramparts. To either side, the beaches take on different personalities — Bentota for larger resorts and calm water, Unawatuna and Hikkaduwa for a lively bay scene, Mirissa and Weligama for surf, whale boats and coconut-tree hill, and Tangalle for long, empty beaches and the most secluded villas.
Days here mix beach and exploration. Take a whale-watching boat from Mirissa (blue whales, November to April), visit a turtle hatchery, ride the coast road past the stilt fishermen at Koggala, learn to surf at Weligama's gentle break, day-trip to the leopards of Yala or the elephants of Udawalawe, and eat rice-and-curry on a beachfront terrace as the fishing boats come in.
December to April is the dry season and prime for the south coast; May to November brings the south-west monsoon with heavier showers, though the sea is often swimmable and rates drop sharply. How do I get to Sri Lanka's south coast?
Fly into Colombo — Jetstar now flies direct from Australia, and Sri Lankan Airlines, Singapore Airlines, Malaysia Airlines and Qatar connect via their hubs. From the airport it's 2–2.5 hours to Galle on the Southern Expressway, and 3–3.5 to Tangalle. Our deals will include a private transfer. Australians need an Electronic Travel Authorisation before departure.
When is the best time to visit the south coast?
December to April is the dry season with calm seas and sunshine, and it coincides with whale season off Mirissa. May to November is the south-west monsoon — showers are heavier and seas rougher, but it's rarely a washout, and rates are at their lowest. If you're travelling June to September, consider the east coast instead.
Where should I stay on the south coast?
Galle Fort for heritage, boutique hotels and walkable evenings (no beach inside the walls, but Unawatuna is 10 minutes away). Bentota for larger resorts and calm water. Mirissa and Weligama for surf, whales and a laid-back beach scene. Tangalle for seclusion and the longest, quietest beaches. Many travellers do two bases.
Is the south coast good for families?
Yes — Bentota's calm bay and larger resorts suit younger children, turtle hatcheries and whale boats are memorable for all ages, and a Yala or Udawalawe safari day is a genuine adventure. Watch the surf and currents at some beaches, and choose a property with a pool for the wet-season months.
What day trips can I do from Galle?
Whale watching from Mirissa, the stilt fishermen at Koggala, Handunugoda tea estate, a Madu River mangrove boat safari, the Kosgoda turtle hatchery, and — with an early start — Yala National Park for leopards or Udawalawe for elephants. Galle Fort itself deserves a slow half-day.
