Central Vietnam is where the country's beach holiday lives. A 30-kilometre ribbon of white sand runs from Da Nang's My Khe Beach south to Hoi An's An Bang, backed by the country's largest concentration of five-star resorts, and at the southern end sits Hoi An — a UNESCO-listed trading port of yellow-washed merchant houses, silk lanterns and riverside cafés that is, by some distance, Vietnam's prettiest town.
The two work as a pair. Da Nang is the modern city with the airport, the Dragon Bridge and the beachfront high-rises; the resort strip between the two — Non Nuoc, Ha My, An Bang — is where the big-name properties spread their villas and pools along the sand; and Hoi An's old town is a 15-minute ride from any of them. Stay on the beach, dine in Hoi An, and you have the best of both.
Days here fill easily. Take a tailor's fitting in Hoi An (a 24-hour suit is a rite of passage), cycle the rice paddies to Tra Que village, ride a basket boat through the coconut palms, and see the lanterns float on the Thu Bon River after dark. The Marble Mountains and the Ba Na Hills' Golden Bridge are close; the imperial city of Hue is a day trip over the Hai Van Pass.
February to August is the dry season with the best beach weather, May to July the hottest and calmest for swimming. September to January is the wet season and brings the occasional typhoon, though Hoi An's old town is atmospheric in the rain. How do I get to Da Nang and Hoi An?
Da Nang International Airport receives direct flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok and Hong Kong, and 80-minute domestic hops from Ho Chi Minh City (Jetstar's direct Australian gateway) and Hanoi. The resort strip is 15–30 minutes from the airport and Hoi An's old town about 45. Most of our deals will include the transfer.
Should I stay in Da Nang or Hoi An?
Stay on the beach between them. The Non Nuoc, Ha My and An Bang stretches hold the best resorts and are 15 minutes from Hoi An's old town and 20 from Da Nang. If you prefer to be walkable to Hoi An's lanterns and restaurants, the boutique hotels in and around the old town are charming, but you'll trade the beach for the river.
When is the best time to visit Hoi An?
February to August is the dry season — March to May for warm, sunny days without the peak heat, and May to August for the best swimming. September to December is wet, with heavy rain and occasional typhoons in October and November. Full-moon evenings each month see the old town lit by lanterns only.
Is the central coast good for families?
One of the best in Asia. The resorts here were built with families in mind — huge pools, kids' clubs, lawns and long, gently shelving beaches — and Hoi An's basket boats, lantern-making classes, cycling and cooking schools keep older kids entertained. Distances are short and transfers easy.
How many nights do I need?
Five nights makes a proper beach holiday with two evenings in Hoi An and a day trip. A week lets you add Hue, Ba Na Hills or a My Son sanctuary morning without rushing. Pair with Saigon or Hanoi for a two-centre trip, or with Phu Quoc for a beach-and-beach combination.
