A decade ago the island in the Gulf of Thailand was pepper farms, fishing villages and a single main road; today it has an international airport, some of Asia's most spectacular new resorts, and beaches that still, in the right places, feel undiscovered. For Australians it's an hour's flight from Saigon and visa-free for stays under 30 days.
The island splits by coast. Long Beach on the west is the original resort strip: 20 kilometres of sand facing the sunset, with everything from boutique bungalows to grand beachfront hotels. The north, around Vung Bau and Bai Dai, is where the luxury clusters have gone — sprawling, self-contained resorts with private beaches. The south, around Sao Beach and the Kem Beach peninsula, has the whitest sand and a growing enclave of design-led five-stars.
Beyond the pool: island-hopping to the An Thoi archipelago for snorkelling, the world's longest over-sea cable car, the night market in Duong Dong for grilled seafood and the island's famous fish sauce, a pepper-farm visit, and jungle trails in the national park that covers most of the north. It's an easy island to drive, with quiet roads and short distances.
November to April is the dry season — calm, sunny and prime; May to October is the wet season, with afternoon showers, some sea swell on the west coast and softer rates. How do I get to Phu Quoc?
Fly Jetstar direct to Ho Chi Minh City, then a 60-minute domestic hop with Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet or Bamboo Airways — there are flights almost hourly. Phu Quoc also has direct international flights from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. Uniquely, Phu Quoc is visa-free for stays up to 30 days, so long as you arrive directly on an international flight or don't leave the island.
When is the best time to visit Phu Quoc?
November to April is the dry season with calm seas and sunshine — December to March is peak. May to October is the wet season; showers are usually short and afternoon-based, but the west-coast beaches can get some swell, and rates drop noticeably. The east coast (Sao Beach) is more sheltered in the wet months.
Which beach should I stay on?
Long Beach for choice, sunsets and proximity to Duong Dong's restaurants and night market. The north-west (Bai Dai, Vung Bau) for large luxury resorts with private beaches and a self-contained feel. The south (Kem, Sao) for the whitest sand and design-led resorts, with the cable car and island-hopping close by.
Is Phu Quoc good for families?
Yes — long, gentle beaches, big resort pools and kids' clubs, the cable car and the VinWonders theme park and safari in the north give families plenty to do, and the flight from Saigon is short. Choose a resort with a sheltered beach in the wet season.
Phu Quoc or Nha Trang?
Phu Quoc is an island with a tropical, resort-focused feel, calmer seas in the dry season and better beaches; Nha Trang is a lively beach city with a wider dining and nightlife scene and easier access to the Cam Ranh luxury resorts.
