Rarotonga is a mountain in a lagoon: a lush volcanic island of jagged green peaks encircled by a reef, a ring of white-sand beaches and a single coastal road you can drive in under an hour. It's the Cook Islands' hub and home to most of its resorts, yet with no traffic lights, no building taller than a palm and a population of 13,000, it feels more like a village than a destination.
Muri Beach on the south-east is the heart of things: a shallow, turquoise lagoon dotted with four motu (islets), the widest choice of resorts and villas, paddleboards and kayaks off the sand, and the Muri Night Market's food stalls a short walk away. The west coast around Arorangi trades the lagoon's shallows for sunsets and the island's best snorkelling at the Aroa marine reserve. Avarua, the little capital on the north, has the Saturday Punanga Nui market and the airport.
A week here is a gentle rhythm. Snorkel the lagoon, take a glass-bottom cruise to a motu for a barbecue, hike the Cross-Island Track past the Needle, hire a scooter and circle the island stopping for coconut smoothies, and book an island night for the drumming and dancing. The day trip to Aitutaki's lagoon by air is the one thing everyone should do once.
May to October is the dry, cooler season with days in the mid-20s and the best conditions for hiking and lagoon time; November to April is warm and humid with short tropical showers. How do I get to Rarotonga?
Jetstar flies direct from Sydney to Rarotonga in about six hours, and Air New Zealand connects through Auckland from other Australian cities. The airport is on the north coast — Muri is 20 minutes away, the west coast 10. Our deals will include the transfer. No visa is needed for Australians, and the currency is the New Zealand dollar.
Muri Beach or the west coast?
Muri for the lagoon, water sports, the night market and the widest resort choice — it's the classic Rarotonga base. The west coast (Arorangi) for sunsets, the Aroa marine reserve's snorkelling and quieter, more boutique properties. The island is so small that either is within 25 minutes of the other.
When is the best time to visit Rarotonga?
May to October is the dry season with cooler, breezier weather ideal for lagoon days and hiking — busiest in the Australian and New Zealand school holidays. November to April is warmer and wetter with brief downpours, greener scenery and softer rates. Swimming is comfortable year-round.
Is Rarotonga good for families?
Very. The lagoon is shallow, calm and safe, the resorts are low-rise with pools and lawns, there's no need for long transfers, and the island's relaxed, safe feel suits children of any age. Muri's motu cruises, the Cross-Island Track for older kids and the Saturday market are highlights. Note that some resorts are adults-only; we'll always say which.
Can I visit Aitutaki from Rarotonga?
Yes — Air Rarotonga runs a 50-minute flight and a full-day Aitutaki tour with a lagoon cruise, snorkelling and lunch on One Foot Island, returning the same evening. It's the most famous lagoon in the Pacific and well worth the day. Overnight stays are also possible and our deals may offer an Aitutaki add-on.
