Singapore is the stopover that became a destination. Eight hours from the east coast and five from Perth, the city-state packs hawker centres, rooftop infinity pools, a UNESCO-listed botanic garden, Michelin-starred street food and a theme-park island into 730 square kilometres — all of it clean, safe, air-conditioned and running on time.
The city splits neatly for a hotel stay. Marina Bay and the Civic District hold the icons — the ship-topped Marina Bay Sands, the grand dames along the river and the skyline views — and put you within walking distance of Gardens by the Bay and the Esplanade. Orchard Road is the shopping boulevard lined with five-star towers. Sentosa, across the causeway, is the resort island with beaches, Universal Studios and family-focused hotels. Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Tiong Bahru supply the boutique, heritage-shophouse alternatives.
Singapore rewards a few days as much as a stopover. Eat your way through Maxwell and Lau Pa Sat, take the cable car to Sentosa, walk the Southern Ridges, spend an evening at the Night Safari, and cool off in a rooftop pool between. It's also the natural pivot for a longer trip — Bali, Phuket, Vietnam and Sri Lanka are all a short flight on.
The weather is equatorial and steady year-round: hot, humid and prone to brief afternoon storms, with November to January the wettest stretch and February to April the driest. Any time — the climate is hot and humid year-round with daily temperatures around 31°C. Big events include Chinese New Year (January/February) and the Formula 1 night race (September).
Marina Bay and the Civic District for the icons, views and walkability to the main sights; Orchard Road for shopping and classic five-star hotels; Sentosa for a beach-resort feel and families doing Universal Studios; Chinatown or Kampong Glam for heritage shophouse boutiques and food. All are 15 minutes apart by taxi.
Two nights makes a rewarding stopover — Marina Bay, Gardens by the Bay, a hawker centre and a rooftop bar. Three to four lets you add Sentosa, the Night Safari, the botanic gardens and the neighbourhoods. Many of our members bookend a Bali, Thailand or Vietnam trip with a Singapore stay at each end.
