Seoul is the anchor: Gyeongbokgung Palace and the hanok lanes of Bukchon, the shopping and nightlife of Myeongdong, Gangnam and Hongdae, the mountain trails of Bukhansan and the cafés of Seongsu, all connected by one of the world's best subway systems. Busan, on the south coast, adds beaches and seafood markets; Jeju island is the volcanic holiday isle of waterfalls, hikes and resort hotels; and Gyeongju is the ancient capital of tombs and temples.
Korea is a four-season country and each has its moment: cherry blossom in April, lush green summers, fiery autumn foliage in October and November, and snowy winters with skiing an hour from Seoul. Add the DMZ tour, a temple stay, a Korean spa (jjimjilbang) and a night at a K-pop show, and a week fills quickly.
Spring (April to May) and autumn (September to November) are the prime seasons — mild, dry and spectacular. Summer is hot and humid with a monsoon in July; winter is cold and clear. How do I get to South Korea from Australia?
Jetstar flies direct from Sydney and Brisbane to Seoul Incheon, and Korean Air, Asiana and Qantas also serve the route — around ten to eleven hours overnight. Incheon Airport is 50–70 minutes from central Seoul by express train or limousine bus. Australians need a K-ETA electronic travel authorisation, applied for online before departure.
When is the best time to visit South Korea?
April for cherry blossom and mild spring days, or October to early November for autumn foliage — both are peak and worth booking early. May, June and September are quieter with good weather. Summer (July–August) is hot, humid and wet; winter (December–February) is cold and dry, with skiing and far fewer tourists.
Is South Korea good for families?
Yes — it's safe, clean and efficient, with theme parks (Lotte World, Everland), palace dress-up in hanbok, hands-on museums, cooking classes and Jeju's beaches and volcanic landscapes. Food is easy for kids (fried chicken, bulgogi, bibimbap) and hotels are used to family rooms.
How many nights do I need in Korea?
Four to five nights covers Seoul thoroughly. Add two for Busan by high-speed train, or three for Jeju by a one-hour flight. A ten-night Seoul–Busan–Jeju loop is the classic first trip. Seoul alone works as a four-night city break.
